When music comes to your rescue

Well, you might as well admit it ! How many times has music come to your rescue when nobody else was there ? I’ve lost count of all the times it stood by me , to be honest.

We all recall times when music  lifted a heavy burden off our shoulders , took us by the hand & showed us the way back to the light. Even in the darkest of times , it retains its magical power to heal every wound and give wings to the soul that longs to fly away from a reality we feel we don’t belong to. Music is a great beautifier , a unique spellbinder and a loyal , valuable companion in the journey of life.

It can speak so loudly and reach deep inside us in secret places of our complex inner world. It can touch and move us  in a welcome way that seems  so familiar and at the same time , express what words alone can’t. Feelings suppressed , haunting fears , dreams unfulfilled , blissful wishes  , words unspoken and hidden thoughts … all become one within a song. More often than not , it is the main reason for our soul to step out of its hiding place and start smiling again.

One of the sweetest addictions and the greatest escape of all !!! So many times I think about how many people have literally loved certain songs and how many of them have got through a lot of hard times because of the gift of music. For me , a song is a gift of the soul and it is priceless. Its value can be measured only by heartbeats , starry nights , heartfelt smiles , dreamy eyes , tears of salvation and journeys to faraway worlds of wonder. It even speaks in silence … long after it is over.

How truly blessed are the special people who can take their passion , their love , their pain , their fears , their troubled thoughts and turn them into something as beautiful as a song that touches and changes so many lives !!! Something that so many people connect to because it speaks directly to each and everyone in a mystical way. How is it possible not to love and be jealous of their relationship with music ? You get the feeling they are holding a key , to which the most tightly closed hearts open. How I wish I had the same power !!!

Music is something , one could keep writing about for hours and I am sure so many of you really feel the same way about it. Whenever you find yourselves in troubled times , whenever your  soul is restless , your  thoughts are weary and your heart is heavy … you run to music for shelter. Every time you feel overwhelmed by emotions and look for a way to express them or to be solaced , dear music is always there. It’s there even at you worst , when your life looks like a melody with all the lyrics messed up . It never turns its back on you. The most stable relationship of all.

Truth is …

If it weren’t for music , we would feel that love is mortal

If it weren’t for the songs , our souls would have no voice

If it weren’t for its warm glow &  its sweeping power ,

everything would seem so wrong and empty

Infinite like love and Powerful beyond measure … That’s music ❤ ♪ ♫ ♩ ♬

Johnny Cash : The man in black who walked the line & became a legend.

Johnny Cash, born on 26th February 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, U.S. was one of those singers and songwriters  whose work  undoubtedly  broadened the scope of American country and western music. He has therefore established himself as a legend in the music world & with his deep expressive voice that commanded attention , he has sang stories about prisons, about injustice , about love , loneliness and hurt , faith and truth … making them his own, sounding as if he had lived them himself. He was always best when he tried to tell his own story though , or something he cared about and his life was nothing but turbulent.  A constant fight between light and darkness.

The recipient of numerous awards, he won 13 Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement award in 1999, and 9 Country Music Association Awards. Cash was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980 and to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1996 he received a Kennedy Center Honor.

There is no denying that when a voice can tell a story with as much resonance and depth  as Cash’s could, honestly, not much else is needed. So powerful and compelling that keeps haunting you. Johnny Cash was a poet for the working men , the underprivileged and the marginalized. He allowed his many weaknesses to be transformed into strength and though deeply wounded and affected by his addictions , he finally found the way to stand on his feet again and achieve musical accomplishments that are staggering. He sold 50 million albums, recorded more than 1,500 songs, boasted fourteen number-one hits, won several awards, and when it comes to musical impact , his is equal to those of The Beatles or Elvis Presley.

Cash’s work from his very early recordings and the country songs of Fifties like “Folsom Prison Blues ” to late efforts like his amazing , gut-wrenching cover of Nine Inch Nails “Hurt” influenced generations of musicians . His songs were full of pathos , pain , regret , hope , lust and fury. They always cut to the heart of the subject matter. Battling drug addiction , looking for shelter in faith and doing things his own way , The Man in Black became an icon , a man who earns almost universal respect among music fans , no matter what kind of music they prefer listening to.

As a rather enigmatic personality , he had never been a man of conventions , paving the way for other artists to do the same. He always stood up for the underdog ( the poor , Native Americans , prisoners , the sinners ) , beating just about every odd that was stacked against him. While his body suffered under the strain of long time abuse, Cash’s mind stayed strong … his spirit stayed stronger , as well as his passion for music.

ARCTIC MONKEYS : So Close To Perfection

Who would have thought of their phenomenal rise ten years ago when Arctic Monkeys played their very first gig ! Four number one albums and two amazing Glastonbury headline sets. Their fifth album AM was released in September to critical acclaim and was one of the fastest selling albums of 2013. As a matter of fact it has sold 560.000 copies in the UK alone. They have definitely raised the bar as  live performers  and as one of Britain’s greatest bands that just got greater in an unexpected but hugely welcome way.

An album that virtually proves that they are not afraid of pushing boundaries and  moving direction . Displaying unparalleled confidence and exceptional musicianship, it makes for a dynamite LP and a reminder of why sex and rock ’n’ roll became linked in the first place. !!! Smart , mind blowing , lustful and cool as hell , AM is an album worth having and unquestionably one that you can’t get enough of from beginning to end. Time will determine whether it is a milestone in contemporary music history but it is absolutely brilliant and might also be one of the greatest of the decade.

Arctic Monkeys are no longer defined by a standard gender but create their own sound instead. Not only rock , definitely not just indie but artists with the ability to choose how they want to move on and what kind of music they want to make. With their remarkably insane talent , they formed and developed their own character in a confused music world. They are lying the foundations for an even more creative course with big songs , cool mesmerizing riffs , romantic aggression  , lyrics that stick in your head and sounds that play with words and create an explosive effect amazing intensity.

Alex Turner seems to write with more confidence than ever ( in fact he proves himself as a great lyricist in songs like “ Do I wanna know ” ) A kind of confidence and depth , the whole record bristles with. Intense , glaring riffs and jabbing vocals. Brilliant bass lines and a sort of passion that is evident in each song , in each rhyme.  All creating a dominating sound that you can’t help falling in love with. Mr Turner and his fellow monkeys use a combination of dynamic music styles , impressively crafted beats , sublime backing vocals & lyrics of unabashed confessions that you almost feel the fire dancing around the band. A fire that has the power to take over your body , mind and soul.

AM not only signifies an important moment in modern music history but places the boys from Sheffield on a course to glory. Forty two minutes of evidence to the future evolution of Arctic Monkeys’ sound and their steps towards the golden pantheon of Rock Legends.  The title of one of the best rock bands of ou times is well deserved.

There is no denying that bands like them rarely come around nowadays . Listen to their masterpiece & rest assured that while this may be the fifth chapter of their story ,the best is yet to come , since it is the beginning  of a bright era. The band is still experimenting , learning , growing , fine-tuning and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them.

Arctic Monkeys were formed in 2002 by guitarist and vocalist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, bass guitarist Andy Nicholson and drummer and backing vocalist Matt Helders.

EDITORS : Carrying the weight of Love

The Editors  have conquered the top of British charts and have appeared as headliners in major European festivals. Their first album “ The Back Room ” has been hailed as one of the best of the 00’s and they had an equally brilliant follow up.  After the remarkable success of «Papillon» and «You don’t know love», everyone anticipated their next steps to be very dynamic and impressive.

“ The weight of your love ” is the fourth studio album of the indie rock band from Birmingham , England and their first since the departure of their guitarist Chris Urbanowicz. The question posed is whether the band is refocused and re-energized enough to write history.

Only a few acts are able to overcome successfully the loss of an integral member therefore it came as no surprise that there were so many who cast doubt over Editors’ ability to recapture and revive some of their past glory and promise. Yet , they delivered an album that calls for your attention and reflects the band’s current state of mind. Hauntingly beautiful melodies that linger , lyrics that speak of love , death , insecurity , bold confessions and Tom Smith’s emotionally charged voice that penetrates your soul. He is probably one of the most charismatic and remarkable singers of the last decade.

“ Two hearted Spider ” “ The Phone Book ”  “ Sugar ” “ Bird of prey ” are some of its brightest moments. The Weight is close to their familiar style and on the whole the Editors manage to keep a high standard especially in terms of production where great importance has been placed.  They team up with Jacquire King who has worked with artists including  Kings of Leon , Norah Jones , Tom Waits and is a multiple Grammy Award winner with nearly 30 nominations.

With consecutive number one albums behind them , it looks like the pressure is on for the band and it is not always that easy to recapture the excitement of their early songs. However this does not diminish their talent , their value and their ability to inspire as a band. They have surely shifted the direction of their sound which admittedly has less electronic angles and may seem a little far from what we have been used to up to now. To some of their fans they may sound  less passionate or with less heart but that is understandable. It is probably a matter of time before they redefine their own identity and prove themselves as a band of great achievements.

Even though it is a period of change for the favorite band and despite the fact that their fourth album is probably not the pinnacle of their achievements , they somehow retain the vulnerability of their lyrics , the sentimental vibes of their music and all the things that make them special. Tom Smith’s singing remains one of the most impressive aspects of “ The Weight of Love ” However good the songs , you get the feeling that they have so much more to give in an effort to re-discover themselves.

There is no doubt that the sparks of energy and the desire remain within them and they just take some time to rest before they move on to another bright chapter in their career. ‘The Weight of Your Love’ is successful in getting the talented Englishmen back on track and is definitely worth listening.

U2 go acoustic and prove they are tough enough for ordinary love.

The Irish band performed  their new single  ” INVISIBLE ” on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon , the new host of the famous US chat show on February 17th. They performed in front of an enthusiastic crowd , accompanied by a marching band on top of New York’s 30 building and they also played an amazing acoustic version of  “Ordinary Love” with house band “The Roots” later in the show. Bono , Larry , Edge and Adam are undoubtedly  tangible proof of the fact that great bands can work miracles and show they are tough enough for ordinary love.

According to recent reports , U2 are rumored to be releasing their new album during this summer. However the release date has not been confirmed yet. The band will be performing at this year’s Academy Awards on March 2nd , nominated alongside Karen O and Arcade Fire  in the category of Best Original Song. Their song “Ordinary Love” for the Mandela : Long walk to Freedom soundtrack  has already  won the Golden Globe for Original Song.

Kurt Cobain : The legacy & the influence of a legend on a whole generation

Kurt Cobain , frontman and primary songwriter of the band Nirvana , would have turned 49 today. Instead , like so many other gifted artists , he died very young at the age of 27. Whether it was suicide or murder remains a matter of controversy. However , what is clear and probably the most important is his influence on a whole downcast generation.

For a band that released only three albums , Nirvana had a remarkably huge impact on the contemporary music world and continue to inspire young musicians and songwriters. Much to their credit , they were the very first to push alternative music from being on the sidelines for too long , into the mainstream. They opened a door for the young aspiring musicians of their generation and paved the way so that they could grab a chance at success.

Cobain has inspired almost twenty years of alternative and indie music , influencing modern music makers like no other. His wide ranging influences were key to the valuable legacy he left behind. Remarkably enough , he managed to combine the untamed energy of his band with his wit and his troubled thoughts.

With their music  approach and attitude , Nirvana reminded the mainstream scene of what a pure rock gig should be like and the fans were fully committed to them. In fact young people could easily relate to them and their sound , forming a relationship that was admirably intimate. Teens were inspired to pick up a guitar , form a band  and do it for themselves. Cobain tried to give rock ‘n’ roll its soul and energy back. Though not a perfect soloist , his playing had a certain musicality and charm to it that didn’t really require any breathtaking feats of musicianship to impress.

His band spread ideas with a dynamic that made them look like a tidal wave with every chorus and created something both powerful and immediate that captivated a whole generation with its stunning originality and raw emotion. This influence has spread farther than expected to a variety of artists who have been affected in many ways. Trying to smash through every kind of pretentiousness Cobain made way for alternative music to reach wider audiences.  People were allowed to reconnect with a kind of music that felt real , more intimate and most importantly , relevant to them. Watching him perform gives you the feeling that he is one of the audience while at the same time being on stage.

Kurt Cobain is still adored by his many fans as the voice of his generation and his spirit still looms large over the alternative rock scene.  Struggling to face his demons and being tortured it seems that no-one could save him from himself in the end. He was one of the purest, most human voices  in rock music. A man who in his own struggle to understand himself , discovered the means to express himself through his songs. His death robbed the rock world of a rare talent but his legacy shows no signs of waning.

Lana Del Rey : Singing of dashed dreams , broken hearts & her dark paradise

Changing from Lizzy Grant to Lana Del Rey , she reinvented herself and it has really worked. Since her breakthrough in 2011 she has been roughed up by critics who doubt her authenticity. Actually she has caused quite a stir with her sudden success. However , it does not seem likely that she will be leaving  the music scene any time soon.

When “ Video Games “ first appeared on the internet , it was  praised for its hypnotic , authentic feel and the follow up “ Blue Jeans ” made her seem ready for the big time. The release of her second album “ Born to Die ” in January 2012 , confirmed her as one of the most compelling new pop stars around , although it received generally mixed reviews from music critics. Whatever the truth behind her phenomenal  success , there is little doubt about her talent and her commitment to her art.

Her sound can be described as chilling , seductive , tragic and somewhat addictive. Her songs eerily dreamlike , in combination with smooth melodies and half-gritty , half-angelic or darkly vocals , have won her millions of fans worldwide. Lana Del Rey could have easily walked straight out of a movie scene of a mid 20th century film and is according to many the embodiment of a lost beauty. Maybe that is what makes her appearance so special. Her vintage image is simply irresistible and so alluring.

Amongst her musical influences , Del Rey cites several contemporary artists such as Elvis Presley, Antony and the Johnsons, Frank Sinatra, and Eminem . “ I really  just like the masters of every genre”  she told BBC radio presenter  Jo Whiley. Her favorite artists include Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Jeff Buckley and Leonard Cohen.

For her fans she is a legend in the making , although she has been subjected to constant and  intense scrutiny as regards her back story , her real talent and her shallow live performances at times. Nevertheless it cannot be denied that she has been given the rare chance to restore our faith in the mainstream music industry. It remains to be seen where she goes from here and whether she is able to live up to our expectations.

The singer seems to have revealed that her new album “Ultraviolence” will be released in May. She told her fans during a recent meeting that the record will be released on May 1st , although she did emphasise that the date was not officially confirmed.

MUSE at their BEST …

When all is said and done … their heart lies on stage

One of my favourite bands ever , put on an epic show that could be nothing less than perfect. Watching  MUSE – LIVE AT ROME OLYMPIC STADIUM  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qETiPhmcCJM is an unrivaled opportunity to experience the full spectrum of their extraordinary talent , musicianship , showmanship and discover for yourselves what makes them so special. Having released two live show albums already they decided to record their third at “Stadio Olympico” in front of 60.000 fans which stands as evidence that people can’t get enough of them.

They undoubtedly give their audience a memorable , momentous evening of jaw dropping performances and ultimately leave us wondering what’s next. The use of detailed shots in combination with views from spider cameras hovering over the surging enthusiastic crowd , the huge digital screens , the actors on stage and an extravagant set , make this probably the most spectacular show of any MUSE tour up to now.

The trio from Devon , take us on a truly mesmerizing journey and introduce us to an entirely new experience of discovering epic older and more recent songs. As for the music itself , it is as professionally delivered as ever !!! Through their work they  reveal their thoughts on existential as well as contemporary issues , modern day capitalism , social alienation , fear of evolution of technology , resistance , love and evoke feelings that everyone can relate to.

The truth is that there are not many bands that put so much effort into their “ live” performances. I personally can’t think of many bands that virtually leave their heart on stage. Their shows definitely live up to their fans’ expectations and are tangible proof of their charismatic nature. Utilizing each venue in a variety of creative ways , being innovative and displaying admirably immense energy while performing , they never cease to be surprising and utterly entertaining.

In their latest release there is no doubt that , apart from all the visual aspects , their presence on stage , their passionate performances & the astounding mixing between instruments and vocals is close to perfection. As a matter of fact at some point the result even surpasses the listener’s expectations. Their interaction with their fans and the fact that Muse sound incredible live , is what makes the band an awesome live act with immense power and unparalleled electrifying energy.

A hardcore fan would probably complain about the absence of songs of albums like  “ Origin of Symmetry” or   “Absolution” which are two of their greatest. However this is a forgivable offense if we take into consideration the fact that their Live at Rome Olympic Stadium was a concert in support of their latest album “The Second Law”. Nevertheless the 20 songs chosen from their lengthy successful career are quite representative.

An almost perfect combination between rare talent and spectacle MUSE tours is an experience not to be missed but for all of us who don’t have the opportunity to enjoy this mind blowing event , Muse’s Live at the Olympic Stadium album is a must have. Take the time to buy yourselves a copy of this cd and immerse in the experience as it is also accompanied by a DVD ( feast for the senses ) featuring additional bonus tracks and videos that takes us on a journey behind the scenes.

MUSE have grown beautifully and to their credit , have done a really great job  in the pursuit of their ambitions.  It is clearer now that their  intricate sound has a distinctive quality that places them among the greatest bands of the last decades and though their studio albums like The Resistance demonstrate their more theatrical qualities , their sound is best captured and truly felt in the live setting.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that MUSE is  “one of the greatest live bands of our generation ” and  have a lot to live up to. As a matter of fact they have  earned fame through their talent and their success rests on tours and albums rather than hits and headlines. This inner strength they have, this desire to evolve and expand and explore will definitely take them to greater heights.

Enjoy their amazing music and discover new ways to transform and transcend the everyday…  😉 http://muse.mu/

Lost and alone … forever wandering

How many times we really feel like crying

We know it well , we’re passers by but

Every single night we raise our eyes up there

Waiting for stars to shine their light upon us

Waiting for signs in a bewildered sky

Hidden , locked up within our secret world

Where hopes and haunting fears collide

Angels who’ve lost their silver wings

Longing for what they’ve dreamed of …

But yet , ready to fly

_ _ _

Our souls adrift upon the tides of time

Like drops of water lost within an endless ocean

Like tiny grains of sand in golden dunes of life

_ _ _

We meet , we part and then again we always cry

For our mistakes and all the words we never meant

Moments we had within our grasp but never spent

Burning our wings like little moths that lost their way

Unable to resist the warmth of tempting flame

Hearts given to desire , then betrayed , but

Still none but ourselves we have to blame.

Defying shadows that obscure the light

_ _ _

Dreaming and wishing for a miracle to come our way

Falling from grace , by fate’s cruel hand being swept away

Trapped , often bleeding but never giving up on hope

Emerging from our past’s cruelest deceit

Embracing loving thoughts & shining bright

We keep our poor misguided hearts alight .

_ _ _

Our souls adrift upon the tides of time

Like drops of water lost within an endless ocean

Like tiny grains of sand in golden dunes of life

_ _ _

Still wide awake , we never really say goodbye

To all the things  that keep us still alive & fighting

Like clouds searching for limits in an endless sky

Keep chasing   magic rainbows …

We still believe in love that’s never dying .

What is this thing called love ?

What is this thing called love ? An everlasting question about the greatest emotion of all.

There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment. Love lifts us up where we belong. It awakens the soul and makes us reach for the impossible. Because of love , we see miracles that are invisible to other people’s eyes.

It’s true that when you love , you open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience things you never dreamed possible. It often makes you feel so vulnerable but at the same time it liberates and completes you. Falling in Love is one of the most beautiful experiences in one’s life and songs are perhaps the ultimate medium through which this feeling can be expressed so beautifully!!! Love has always been a source of inspiration and music has the power to give life to emotions and words that could not be expressed differently. When in love , you suddenly find new meaning in songs you previously disregarded. They seem to speak directly to you and every single lyric takes on so much more weight.

Can just a few songs squeeze the boundless , eternal emotion we call love ? How can music give wings to the heart and express all the things that cannot be put into words … ?
