Dave Gahan : The voice that soothes the soul

DAVE GAHAN , the voice behind “ Enjoy the Silence ” , lead singer and co-songwriter for the alternative Rock and New Wave band DEPECHE MODE is probably one of the most recognizable male voices and has been greatly adored for the last decades. Born in Essex , United Kingdom on May 9th 1962 , Dave joined the band in 1980 and together with multi-instrumental , co – songwriter Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher wrote a different music story that has had a great impact on many generations.

Against all odds and through the course of time which is often merciless , they have been together for more than thirty years … evolving , surviving , thriving and they keep going. Originally an alternative New Wave Synth-Pop band , with their own clearly distinctive sound and a frontman like Gahan , with his unique baritone vocals , DM discovered an almost instant audience with their first albums , which kept growing. Through the years their sound has often changed but their music remained popular. Their album “ Songs of Faith and Devotion ” for example was a darker project , moody at times and rather introspective , shifting towards the Alternative Rock sound.

Gahan has also worked on solo projects like “ Paper Monsters ” and “ Hourglass ” and even got a turn as lead vocalist for Soulsavers with great success. In no less than 15 albums he has shared more than forty Top 40 hit singles with Depeche Mode , making his band one of the biggest alternative acts in modern music history. As a matter of fact , only a few bands have seen so many different versions and covers of their songs out there. In some of them , as in the case of « Personal Jesus » by Johnny Cash , the cover sounds truer than their own version.

There has always been a lot of sacred imagery in DM songs. A lot of talk of angels, souls, redemption , dependence , struggle , divine intervention and a perpetual yearning to feel whole with yourself and the world , to find love and salvation , make an effort to fight your own demons. Dave Gahan’s unmistakable voice has been central to the sound of DM since they embarked on their journey back in the 80’s. An inseparable part of them that is instantly recognizable and greatly loved by all the fans. He has undoubtedly contributed in making DM a group with an unmatched ability to produce timeless music. It has been said that their songs are often permeated with intellectual depth , unique elegance , addictive power , honesty and artistic devotion and that is true by all means.

Dave Gahan and his band can claim over 100 million in record sales during their successful career , numerous award nominations for music awards and are proud to have devoted fans of all ages. The fact that so many people are moved and identify with their work on various and very deep levels as well as their long lasting influence on the music scene of the last decades , is a great honor and something to be proud of. Their latest ( 13th ) album “ Delta Machine ” was well received critically and they keep providing inspiration for a new generation of musicians and artists.

Gahan’s voice retains its increased agility and its rare charm. He is wiser though he still sounds young , delivering emotionally massive songs in his own mesmerizing way. Along the way, he went from a clean-cut youth to a ravaged Christ figure but always remained a charismatic and physical frontman. Armed with a formidable voice that has only strengthened over the years, away from the addictions and the dark days of the past , having hit intense public highs and the deepest personal lows , Dave is still here and it seems we “ Just can’t get enough ” of what soothes the soul.

Vows are spoken to be broken
Feelings are intense, words are trivial
Pleasures remain, so does the pain
Words are meaningless and forgettable

bandNow I’m not looking for absolution
Forgiveness for the things I do
But before you come to any conclusions
Try walking in my shoes

_ _ _

I’m hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here

Angels with silver wings
Shouldn’t know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you
If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it’s your eyes He’s seeing through

Sivert Høyem : “ Endless Love ” is here to stay

endless love 1

Sivert Høyem’s greatly anticipated new songs are finally here.

“ Endless Love ” is his fifth solo album and it can be described as rather experimental , inspiring and sincere . Exploring love at its more mature forms and dealing with adult themes through a music that is deeply touching , innovative and inspiring , it is impossible not to win your heart.

Once more , it provides a great chance for Sivert’s unique qualities as a singer and songwriter , to unfold beautifully. Exploring successfully different musical landscapes , giving us brilliant performances of epic ballads through a blues & gospel-like quality voice , the album is a gem waiting to be discovered.

“ ENDLESS LOVE ” was recorded in Stockholm and Oslo & is honestly as epic , warm , mature and moving as ever. You find yourself lost in grand piano masterpieces , shredding  guitars , admirable vocals and heart warming , sincere lyrics that touch your soul. The songs grow more and more on you  as you keep listening. Sivert Høyem’s special , lyrical voice gives a unique touch to each and every one of them. The whole album is dedicated to Per Eirik Johansen ( his personal manager ) in order to honor his memory , since he unfortunately passed away at the age of 54 , before its release. His enthusiasm , guidance and support have been a valuable help through the years and he will be definitely  greatly missed.

Singing seems to be in the center of “ Endless Love ” and its exploratory mood comes as a pleasant surprise. It portrays love through the eyes of a mature man and the lyrics are courageously written and performed with a poetic feel , melancholy , irony and that beloved timeless and introvert darkly pulse we have come to love. There is no doubt about Sivert’s rare , deep knowledge of songwriting. Songs like “ Little Angel ” are exceptionally performed and touch sensitive chords. “ Görlitzer Park ” talks of people swallowed by a city , feeling alone. “ Free as a bird ” is rather uplifting and pretty , giving a happy tone while “ Ride on sisters ” is mellow and hopeful. “ Handsome Savior  ” is a beautiful revelation full of gospel vibes  and “ Inner Vision ” which proceeded the release of the album is poetic and mysterious.

Sivert keeps surprising us in the most pleasant ways and listening to his songs surely straightens everything out and speaks to the soul 🙂

Take time to discover “ Endless Love ”

Kings Of Leon : Strap in their “ Mechanical Bull ” and enjoy the ride

Over the past ten years , Kings Of Leon have established themselves as one of the biggest bands in the world. They have managed to blend southern rock , blues and modern sounds to create their own unique style. Kings of Leon members may not be the most high energy band when on stage but  their music carries enough energy to light up a whole stadium if needed. Their music speaks for them and that is what matters the most.

Their latest album “ MECHANICAL BULL ” was nominated for the best Rock album at this year’s Grammy Awards and they definitely know how to make good rock songs but most of all , how to make them speak to the crowds. Almost ten years of experience and tours , have given the band time to evolve , create powerful music and deliver what their fans have been missing.

The group’s lead singer , Caleb Followill , has a rare voice made of rock. He admittedly possesses a wide range with a special raspy , rough and rugged tone that screams “ Rock ” from a distance. With the release of their sixth album , the band does not disappoint us. As a matter of fact it sounds like they never left. It can be seen as a rather introspective turnaround in their career , some sort of returning to their roots. Being a southern rock band at its core , Kings Of Leon have reached great massiveness and a certain creative peak but their formula of success remains resilient through the years. This time , the deliver an album that is professional , focused and testifies their status as a classic rock band.

Knowing how to structure songs of emotional impact , the band  often leaves you wanting more. In the case of “ Mechanical Bull ” , they certainly leave you with the desire to take another ride and enjoy songs of endurance. “ Supersoaker ” is instantly immediate and cheeky. “Don’t matter sets things off and reminds you of the kind of energy Kings Of Leon are able to create , at their best moments. “ Wait for me ” is a ballad full of longing that stands out. “ Temple ” suggests absolution through pain and hurt.

You can probably sense that the band has in a way come to terms with its identity. It is true that 2010’s “ Come Around Sundown ” was not that promising but I guess following the huge success of “ Only By The Night ” was not an easy thing to do. Kings Of Leon seem to have found the way to live up to their fans’ expectations by playing it safe and creating an album that takes them back to a familiar music territory .

Just strap in and Enjoy it !!!

THE BLACK KEYS : A duo with the power to put Rock’n’Roll in your soul

After several albums and a decade of hard touring , the two-man band from Akron , Ohio have virtually reached the masses. Trends may come and go but they stayed in their own sealed off world and kept evolving. In a strange era when radio hits are ephemeral and hollow , The Black Keys have risen to fame with the authenticity of their sound. Especially their two last LPs have gone platinum and have won them many Grammy awards.

They have written memorable songs and worked tirelessly to become better through practice , digging into old records they love , to discover what makes them so special, creating music , growing their audience and their influence on the music scene. Drawing on resources from the past , they have updated their music to such admirable forms that evoke nostalgia for real Rock’n’Roll . With blues-based blasts about inescapable heartaches , inevitable regrets , pain , insufferable girlfriends , inconvenient love , they have come to the forefront of the contemporary music scene and proved they are a band that can make a difference.

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have somehow smeared the lines between blues , rock , R&B and soul , creating a kind of powerful music that gives you nasty body-rocking grooves. Like those bands of the good old days that you keep talking about. EL CAMINO  is probably their best work up to now , where the dark hearted blasts , the amazing riffs , the sleek sexy choruses , groovy and relentless beat twists , tempt you to sing along and get lost in the vibes of each track.

The Black Keys keep looking for ways to shake up that old days blues-rock rumble and they are doing it brilliantly. Being heavily influenced by blues-rock bands of the past but at the same time making those old riffs so current and new , they have admittedly crafted a catchy sound and an album worth listening to. They seem to have concentrated on the fundamentals , kept clean of unnecessary effects and dived into the rich well of American roots music, having proved over and over again that they understand the truth of rock and roll , country , rhythm and blues , with a sound that resembles no other. All these by having the right attitude and an undying belief in the freedom of music.

Songs like “ Gold on the ceiling ” give you the impression they existed forever. “ Sister ” is full of classic riffs and hooks worthy of another era and “ Little black Submarines ” features a combination of chords and reveals a mellower side. Most of the tracks in “ El Camino ” are reminiscent of those made long ago and the lyrics are so unpretentious and sincere which is not always that easy. Sounds that keep shouting “ I love Rock and Roll ”… and just like in the lyrics of their song “ Mind Eraser ” where the singer pleads ( Don’t let it be over ) , you keep wishing their music doesn’t stop.

LONDON GRAMMAR : Exploring a world of emotions in grace

Responsible for one of 2013’s most impressive releases , the Trio from Nottingham have seen their album reach number two in the UK and enter top 20 around the world. LONDON GRAMMAR may have only formed last year but with their promising debut album “ If You Wait ” , their smooth grooves , catchy chords and amazing vocals , they have brought some more variety into the music scene.

They are among the hottest new music acts & this comes as no surprise. Twenty-three year old lead singer Hannah Reid emanates a vulnerability and sings effortlessly in a clear , yet passionate way. With Dan Rothman’s guitar lines and Dominic Major’s synths and drums , they manage to create  intricate and beautiful undulating patterns that evoke feelings and give an melancholic  , dramatic , atmospheric  tone to their music . The simplicity and the subtlety of their songs is compelling at times and Hannah’s velvety stunning voice , takes them to another level. The quality of her soaring vocals is admirable.  Even the smooth cover of Kavinsky’s “ Nightcall ” becomes their own and is in accordance with their style.

The listener explores a world of tender feelings , longing , love , fear of misspent youth , heart-wrenching confessions , hopes and dreams , in an emotionally charged atmosphere which is created due to the empowering quality of the vocals. London Grammar’s distinctive blend of atmospheric classical sound with electric beats , sets them aside from any other new band. Songs like “ Hey Now ” and “ Wasting my young years ” encapsulate their sound . “Interlude ” will mesmerize you … “ Strong ” demands you attention but at the same time more upbeat tracks can be found so that a balance is maintained.

The band Is still working on their sound and continue developing their skills. It surely takes some time to get things right but they seem to be on the right track. Their future material is highly anticipated and the three young Londoners’ music spells success in grace and style .

Inside FOALS’ bitter-sweet “ Holy Fire ”

Foals are an indie rock band , formed in Oxford in 2005 & have been among the winners at the Q awards. They released their first album “ Antidotes ” in 2008 and their second “ Total Life Forever ” in 2010. HOLY FIRE is their most mature third album that hit the record stores in February 2013. Their work is considered one of the most innovative and intriguing of the last few years, however , their last album comes as a refreshing breath , as a surprise , renewing your faith in good music.

You will probably have already heard “ Inhaler ”. Slow build tracks with Yiannis Philippakis’ neat vocals and bursts of energy , are the most striking features of this album which gradually grows on you. It kind of unravels and slowly blooms every time you listen to it , causing rushes of intense emotions. You discover fragile moments of solitude and grief. Sudden , sharp outbursts of energy and light , rushes of emotions , soaring choruses , lovely chords and epic builds of sounds. All these , with a rare immediacy and honesty that really surprises you. Their massive sound has a certain singular twist and temperament that resembles no other. Not an easy thing to achieve.

Confident and clearly comfortable in their sound , FOALS as it has been well written “ … have learned to calmly deliver packages of dynamite , delicate and volatile , like true masters of tension and release ”

Their talent is indisputable and their ability to create music through diverse sets of sounds is admirable. They deliver a sound that articulately climaxes and knows the way to hit you directly in the right spot. Yiannis Philippakis’ lyrics seem to reflect the growth process of the band itself. Coupled with his talented  voice , the striking , sensitive chords and exploratory songwriting … the result is remarkable.

“ HOLY FIRE ” will probably take its time to develop its hooks and become one of your favorite but it definitely rewards those who consider themselves to be repeat listeners. It’s an album so rich in sounds and innovative spirit that as you dive deeper into it , as you scratch the surface and peel off its layers , you discover a core full of depth , mystery , emotions , confessions and smart music.

All signs point ahead and FOALS are about to seize what is theirs for the taking , hopefully without forgetting who they are and what brought them together in the first place.

30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto Wins Best Supporting Actor

The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman and actor Jared Leto wins Best Supporting  Actor Oscar for his role in  Dallas Buyers Club  where he portrayed Rayon, a transgender woman who’s HIV-positive.

Prior to filming, Leto had taken a several years-long  pause from acting to focus on his band, “30 Seconds to Mars”. Having won a vast majority of awards this season ( including Golden Globe, SAG, Critics’ Choice and Independent Spirit awards )  it was clear that he was the heavy favorite for the Oscar. His acceptance speech was  simple , sincere , heartwarming , emotional and one of the best of the night.

Last year’s best supporting actress winner, Anne Hathaway, presented the award at Sunday’s ceremony and here’s what Jared had to say :

“ Incredible. Ellen, I love you. To my fellow nominees, I’m so proud to share this journey with you. I’m in awe and have so much respect for you all. To the Academy, thank you.

|In 1971, in Bossier City Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged here kids to be creative and work hard and do something special. That girl was my mother and she’s here tonight. I just want to say ‘I love you mom, thank you for teaching me to dream.’

To my brother Shannon, the best big brother in the world: Thank you so much for sharing this insane adventure that is 30 Seconds to Mars and for being my best friend.

To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight in places like Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to to say we are here, and as you struggle to make your dreams happen and live the impossible, we are thinking of you tonight.

This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS. And to those of you who have ever felt injustice because of who you are and who you love, I stand here in front of the world with you and for you.

Thank you so much, and good night.”

What will it take to get you back on your feet

You lost your will and now you’re losing your sleep

My good intentions are all wasted on you

What good would trying do you ?

Trying is all you can do…

I do not think that this is anyone’s fault

It’s not my business to make sense of it all

I came here looking for a life & you came here too

What good would trying do you ?

Trying is all you can do…

You sat there waiting all night but nobody came

No handsome savior coming in from the rain

No steady hand to straighten everything out

He’s just the same as me , he’s never around

I do not claim that I am always so strong

You’ve seen me falter and you’ve seen me undone

Don’t add your spite to the load we’re dragging uphill

Rough times won’t rock our boat

but  our meanness surely will

You sat there waiting all night but nobody came

No handsome savior coming in from the rain

No steady hand to straighten everything out

He’s just the same as me , he’s never around

PLACEBO : Still very much alive and loud

Since their first album back in 1996 , when PLACEBO first exploded onto the rock scene , they  have admittedly remained quite loyal to the image they originally carved  which has rewarded them with thousands of loyal fans worldwide.

They are back with their seventh album which will definitely appeal to their long time fans. LOUD LIKE LOVE has a strange audible warmth to it that helps it buoy Placebo’s often melancholic songs. In terms of production there is a certain kind of spark , a maturity  and a dramatic tension to many of the songs that is rather familiar. An album loaded with Molko’s high-pitched vocals that he charismatically uses to convey the feeling of his songs. Perhaps in a less intense way this time but yet appealing and easily absorbed.

From MEDS ( released in 2006 ) onwards it has been claimed that the band have lost a part of their former charm  that probably made them so attractive to all the outcasts and they seem to have dropped their very dark gritty , spirited riffs and deviant behavior . However we should bear in mind that even bands have to grow , mature and evolve.  Their newest album is another strong step for them.

“ Loud Like Love ” is also the opening track that has a unique grace about it , spewing love and clarity. Tracks like “ A million thousand pieces ” resemble an open vein from which Molko’s inner psyche seems to flow. This is after all , something he has always been able to do with great ease , unabashed honesty and vulnerability.  Most of the songs are full of sensitivity , simplicity , honesty and make an effort to strike a balance between deeply moving emotions and less intense moments. Even though they sound more mature , their known  template doesn’t change much on the rest of the album.

Still seductive , with lyrical wit and sensitivity … there has always been far more to them than meets the eye. One might say that their best days are behind them , but we cannot doubt the fact that from the moment you press play , it is obvious that this is a typical Placebo album , with all the elements that have made them so popular. Trying to present familiar themes in a refreshed setting , it may not be a repetition of their past history or former triumphs but it continues their story in the same vein , on the same path.

If you are one of those who have kept up with them over the years , then you will probably have the album in your collection. In case you have lost touch , “ Loud Like Love ” is more than enough to entice you and bring you back.
