DAVE GAHAN , the voice behind “ Enjoy the Silence ” , lead singer and co-songwriter for the alternative Rock and New Wave band DEPECHE MODE is probably one of the most recognizable male voices and has been greatly adored for the last decades. Born in Essex , United Kingdom on May 9th 1962 , Dave joined the band in 1980 and together with multi-instrumental , co – songwriter Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher wrote a different music story that has had a great impact on many generations.
Against all odds and through the course of time which is often merciless , they have been together for more than thirty years … evolving , surviving , thriving and they keep going. Originally an alternative New Wave Synth-Pop band , with their own clearly distinctive sound and a frontman like Gahan , with his unique baritone vocals , DM discovered an almost instant audience with their first albums , which kept growing. Through the years their sound has often changed but their music remained popular. Their album “ Songs of Faith and Devotion ” for example was a darker project , moody at times and rather introspective , shifting towards the Alternative Rock sound.
Gahan has also worked on solo projects like “ Paper Monsters ” and “ Hourglass ” and even got a turn as lead vocalist for Soulsavers with great success. In no less than 15 albums he has shared more than forty Top 40 hit singles with Depeche Mode , making his band one of the biggest alternative acts in modern music history. As a matter of fact , only a few bands have seen so many different versions and covers of their songs out there. In some of them , as in the case of « Personal Jesus » by Johnny Cash , the cover sounds truer than their own version.
There has always been a lot of sacred imagery in DM songs. A lot of talk of angels, souls, redemption , dependence , struggle , divine intervention and a perpetual yearning to feel whole with yourself and the world , to find love and salvation , make an effort to fight your own demons. Dave Gahan’s unmistakable voice has been central to the sound of DM since they embarked on their journey back in the 80’s. An inseparable part of them that is instantly recognizable and greatly loved by all the fans. He has undoubtedly contributed in making DM a group with an unmatched ability to produce timeless music. It has been said that their songs are often permeated with intellectual depth , unique elegance , addictive power , honesty and artistic devotion and that is true by all means.
Dave Gahan and his band can claim over 100 million in record sales during their successful career , numerous award nominations for music awards and are proud to have devoted fans of all ages. The fact that so many people are moved and identify with their work on various and very deep levels as well as their long lasting influence on the music scene of the last decades , is a great honor and something to be proud of. Their latest ( 13th ) album “ Delta Machine ” was well received critically and they keep providing inspiration for a new generation of musicians and artists.
Gahan’s voice retains its increased agility and its rare charm. He is wiser though he still sounds young , delivering emotionally massive songs in his own mesmerizing way. Along the way, he went from a clean-cut youth to a ravaged Christ figure but always remained a charismatic and physical frontman. Armed with a formidable voice that has only strengthened over the years, away from the addictions and the dark days of the past , having hit intense public highs and the deepest personal lows , Dave is still here and it seems we “ Just can’t get enough ” of what soothes the soul.
Vows are spoken to be broken
Feelings are intense, words are trivial
Pleasures remain, so does the pain
Words are meaningless and forgettable
_ _ _
I’m hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here
_ _ _
Angels with silver wings
Shouldn’t know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you
If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it’s your eyes He’s seeing through
